NUCO Travel - Student Promotional Items
I was lucky enough to be chosen for the role of Junior Graphic Designer at NUCO Travel in October 2022. This is a freelance position on a temporary, seasonal contract to help out with the merchandise and promotional items for the ski season ahead.
Within this role I work primarily with print, creating designs to be transferred to different merchandise such as t-shirts, jackets, flags and banners for skiing holidays. This means ensuring that the print settings are perfect before sending the work off, all designs working in vectors and text into outlines. Alongside this, I also work on the company's digital elements, including photo resizing and uploading to their corporate website.
T-Shirt Designs
Here are some of the t-shirts I have designed. The back image on these are ones that I have designed.
With the t-shirt designs, we are given more free rein in creating artwork to go on to the back. I find this part fun as I am able to really think about what kind of designs would work well with the university. For example, the first t-shirt for FUSC is for Falmouth University, I have incorporated a wave and a mountain into this because Falmouth is based in Cornwall.
Jacket Designs
We also have to mock up all of the coats that the customers have chosen and place their logos into the chosen positions the university societies have asked for.
There is a booklet which has the options for all of the coats that are available and then we have to change a template to look as much like that coat as possible so that the university can see what the font, colour of font and logos will look like against the background.
The societies usually give us a brief which explains where they want the logo to be placed on the front and also on the back along with any text they want to be added.
Flag Designs
Here are a couple of different variations I did for flags for different universities. We had to work with a colour scheme, logos and artwork and then place it in a way that is eye-catching - especially when blown up on a very large scale. I find that designing the flags is really different to what I usually have to do so its nice to have a change and work on something else.
SHY FX Social Media Post
Here I was given a brief with all of the relevant information I needed for the event, including the dates, location, logos etc. I was then asked to design an Instagram post to promote the event.
I began by using an image of SHY FX himself which I found was used on a variety of different adverts that he had about different shows. I thought that this worked well along with the bright eye-catching colour of the yellow. However, I was informed that there was a need to add in the NUCO After Dark logo and maintain its colour scheme of it throughout the design.
I decided to keep the sound waves in the background and change them to the turquoise colour from the After Dark palette. I then used this colour again for the shadows behind the titles. I also took the pink shade as well as I felt that this was a colour that would attract a lot of attention and be very eye-catching. Rather than using an image of SHY FX, they had decided to keep to using his name tag logo instead, I made this much bigger so that it stood out and was the centre of attention on the Instagram post.
I was really happy with the end result and I enjoyed designing for a social media post as it is something different from the usual tasks I am given. I think that it is really exciting that this design will be used to advertise such a huge event in the Alps.
SHY FX Motion Graphic
I then moved onto creating a couple of quick and easy motion graphics for the Instagram post, this will be used as a GIF or posted as a reel or onto a story. The movement of the SHY FX, although only very small, will help to grasp the attention of the viewer as they are scrolling on down their feeds.
I used Canva to produce these designs, this was the first time I used software other than Adobe Suit. I found it very easy to pick up and understand and I am really happy that I am pushing outside of my comfort zone and learning new techniques and software.
